There were 7 bands from the north-east playing at a jazz festival in Elgin in July 1961.
The event included a contest in which the bands were competing for various awards. There were 2 Dundee acts who entered - Jake Spalding's 1919 Jazz Band and Bill Scott's Saratoga Jazzmen. Jake managed to win the award for "Best trumpet player" and also in the 1919 Jazz Band was teenager, Roger Ball, who won the "Most promising young player" award. Later (in 1962) Roger went to Dundee Art College, met Molly Duncan, and the Dundee Horns were born, leading of course, to the forming of the Average White Band in the 70's. |

The New Faces were a trio - a guy from Glasgow, a lass from Wales and Ian Grant from Dundee.
Although their music was mostly "easy listening" in style, they had a very successful career touring all around the world and appearing on TV shows. When they were in America for example, they played Las Vegas and were guests on TV shows hosted by stars such as Jack Benny and Jerry Lewis. Later, Liberace invited them to be the support act on his USA tour in 1977. They've also been on just about every variety show and light entertainment show on UK TV in the 70's. New Faces have also released numerous singles and a couple of albums. The advert here is dated March 1976 and is for 2 performances at the Ambassador. It also reminds you that they were winners of TV talent shows "Opportunity Knocks" and their namesake "New Faces". |

Dundee musician, Gordon Douglas was in a few bands during the 70's.
Rewinding back to March 1972 however, when Gordon was still at Art College, he was one of a bunch of students who presented an art exhibition in Anstruther. It wasn't only their art that was on display, but music too. Gordon teamed up with George Boyter and composed taped music to accompany time-lapse films which were also part of the exhibition. (An idea kind of like the soundscape ambient music Eno did a few years later for his art shows) Afterwards, Gordon and George were involved in groups such as The Cows, Seconds, Badger, as well as working on theatre projects. |

This article confirms the date when Jim Kelly joined Honeybus - published in the music press in August 1968,
It also supplies proof that he didn't play on the band's hit single "I Can't Let Maggie Go" which was released in April, a few months before Jim joined. He did, however, play on their single "Girl Of Independent Means" which came out in September 1968, the date of the ad. |

Dundee accordionist, Arthur Spink, was a Scottish traditional style player who released many records, most of which were your typical heather and hogmanay type of material.
However, in September 1968, he caught the Beatlemania bug, and brought out a single called - "Beatles Och Aye". This wasn't one of his own compositions but a medley of Fab 4 tunes. |
